Levurin®

Composition

One sachet of Levurin® oral powder contains 250 mg of lyophilized powder of Saccharomyces boulardii and 1000 mg of inulin.

Saccharomyces boulardii is a yeast that is resistant to the action of gastric and intestinal juices, antibiotics and sulfamides, but sensitive to the action of systemic and oral antifungals and quinoline derivatives (the strain of Saccharomyces boulardii Lessafre CNCM I – 3799 from Levurin® is identical to genetic view of Hansen strain CBS 5926).

Inulin is a polysaccharide of fructose and belongs to the class of carbohydrates known as fructans (inulin from Levurin® is a standardized extract with controlled therapeutic potential).

Mechanism of action

Saccharomyces boulardii can interfere with pathogenesis in the intestinal lumen through several mechanisms: the effect of pathogenic anti-toxins, the effect of inhibiting the development of pathogens, the effect of improving the integrity of the intercellular junction and the trophic effect on the intestinal mucosa.

Saccharomyces boulardii, when administered orally, reaches steady state within 3 days (in the small intestine and colon) and is eliminated within 3-5 days after discontinuation.

The inulin in the composition of Levurin is a substrate for metabolism by the yeast Saccharomyces boulardii and thus has the potential to support the mechanism of action of Saccharomyces boulardii.

Recommendation

Through the synergistic action of the two components, Levurin® has potential in:

– Prevention and treatment of diarrhea associated with antibiotic administration

– Prevention of recurrent infections with Clostridium difficile

– Treatment of acute infectious diarrhea

Administration method

On the recommendation of your doctor, Levurin® can be given at the same time as the antibiotic dose.

Levurin® is recommended for adults and children older than 6 months, by oral administration of 1-2 sachets / day, the doses can be increased with the doctor’s advice, if there are no contraindications.

People with central venous catheters who have had recent surgery, undergoing immunosuppressive therapy, as well as those with faecal bleeding should consult their physician before taking Levurin®.

The content of the Levurin® sachet can be dissolved in water, tea, fruit juices, yoghurt, fruit or vegetable purees, which are not very cold or hot.
